With great care the craftsman runs their skilled hands over the chair they have just built. Their fingers communicate with the wood, telling them things even their trained eyes cannot detect. Only when they are certain that each surface, every joint is perfectly crafted and finished, will they then affix the Stickley shopmark to the piece. That's how it is today at Stickley, and that's how it was when the company began.

The Inside Story

The beauty of a piece of fine furniture emanates from its very core. For 100 years, New York-based Stickley Furniture has designed its collections with this simple premise in mind. Certainly designs have been modified over the century to keep pace with changing tastes and traditions, but the craftsmanship of a Stickley piece remains superior.

Stickley's Traditional Collection includes furniture of the Queen Anne, Chippendale and Hepplewhite periods. Its 21st Century and Metropolitan transitional lines meet the millennium in savvy style. And its new Directoire Collection reflects the furniture movement of late-eighteenth century France from fussy and intricate to clean and contemporary.

Of course, the pinnacle of Stickley's  fine furniture collections remains its Mission Oak line. First introduced in 1905 as "simple furniture built along mission lines,"  the collection helped set the standard in fine American woodwork for the entire furniture industry. It exemplifies Stickley's commitment to crafting timeless furniture fashions using yesterday's design ideas retooled for today's lifestyles.

As with every piece of Stickley furniture, the Mission Oak line is a work of art from the inside out, beginning with the selection of the finest quartersawn white oak available. Because quartersawing yields only a limited number of knot-free boards from each log, the top grade wood is in extremely high demand. Moreover, each piece is created using Stickley's unique and time-honored construction techniques:

Hidden dovetailed cross rails for self-locking strength.
Tenons and keyed tenons for strength and durability.
Glass placement secured with quarter rounds and mitered for a perfect fit.
Bed rail construction that eliminates wobble or rock.
Resawn and book matched door panels for grained panels on all pieces.
Side-hung and center guided drawers for proper alignment and suspension.
Quadralinear posts for distinctive construction that displays the oakÕs ray flake.
Ship lap planking for beauty and character.
Finishing by hand rubbing to achieve depth and clarity.

As the company celebrates 100 years of quality furniture making, look for the legendary Stickley crafting techniques in all of its furniture collections.
